Wilderness Medicine

Whether you are leading a backpacking trip through the 100-mile wilderness, mountain biking at Sugarloaf, or paddling in a remote area, wilderness medicine courses help prepare outdoor leaders and enthusiasts for emergencies in the outdoors. Katahdin Rescue offers three levels of wilderness medicine courses through Sierra Rescue curricula, which follow the Wilderness Medicine Education Collaborative (WMEC) standards.

Course Offerings

Wilderness First Aid

Through hands-on scenarios and skills practice, participants will be introduced to patient assessment, the treatment and management of injuries in a wilderness environment, and potentially life-saving interventions. CPR certification is included with WFA courses. No experience is required to take this course.

Wilderness Advanced First Aid

A 35-40 hour course, Wilderness Advanced First Aid courses satisfy many trip leader requirements. This course dives deeper into core topics and scenarios than a Wilderness First Aid course. CPR certification is included with WAFA courses.

Wilderness First Responder

A 72-80 hour course, Wilderness First Responder courses are perfect for trip leaders, wilderness expedition leaders, and anyone who spends significant time in Maine’s remote wilderness. CPR certification is included with WFR courses.
